AFC - Automated Fare Collection

Payolog’s Automated Fare Collection (AFC) Platform enables transit authorities  manage payments in all kind of Public Transit systems (Bus, Train, Metro, Metrobus, Ferries ), Parks, Zoos, Bike Sharing, Ice Skating, Amusement Parks etc. with single card mapping as City Card. Payolog AFC has a web-based architecture that has a unique user experience. It consists of different modules, each of which has different functionalities.

Payolog’s AFC can be easily configured to support Card or Account based Operations and also dynamic fee/tariff management which is crucial in the transit business.

Web & Mobile Portal

The Payolog AFC System has a provides a has a web-based portal – this gives the passengers more control during their riding experience.

These are: ​​

  • Capability to Match their city cards with their account,
  • Ability to view their balance,the last transactions completed with their card and the transit schedules
  • Capability to add any other information requested by the transit authorities.

Open Loop

Our Open loop architecture enables the AFC system to integrate with the BIN providers (the issuers) or the payment gateways for supplying next generation EMV Card execution properly within the system in accordance with the EMV security standards.

One of the significant differences between the open loop and closed loop control system is that in an open loop system the desired output does not depend on the control action. While in the closed loop system the desired output depends on the control action of the system. The other differences between the open and closed loop system are shown below in the comparison chart.

Closed Loop

A closed loop card is an electronic payment card that a cardholder can only use to make purchases from a single company. A closed loop card, also called a single purpose card, will usually have the company’s logo on it, indicating where the card can be used, but it will not have the logo of a major payment processor like Visa or MasterCard.

Closed loop cards are an electronic payment card that can only be used with a specific payee. Generally electronic payment cards can be either closed loop cards or open loop cards. By contrast, an open loop card is a card type more commonly associated with all types of standard transactions. An open loop card can generally be used anywhere the card brand is accepted.

Account Management

As the system is built up with various module. This one includes a set of users within the system of collection management functions.

These are:

  • The Account information module
  • Account related transactions module
  • Check balance, tickets, or login logs for user’s module


Revenue Management

This module allows the system to calculate, collect and monitor the financial transactions processed within the system. The fare calculation engine is the main financial engine. It calculates the fare of each ride within the backend as a full EMV solution.


Business Intelligence

This module allows users to analyze the data generated by the terminals and is aggregated by the central system.


System & Terminal Monitoring

This module allows system users to monitor the system environment remotely and also logs the maintenance records generated by the system administrators.


Inventory Management

This module enables users to track the inventory.

  • It checks the levels of products (SAMs, cards, tickets etc.),
  • Generates alerts when each of the items go below the defined limit/s.


Fraud Management

The functionality of this module is to detect abnormal events and activities within the system:

  • Any fraudulent recharges
  • Simultaneous validations
  • Overruled cards
  • SAM’s operations

Web Top-up/Recharge

Our AFC platform has the ability to make a single or automated top-up via the web or mobile application. The sensitive card payment information is stored in a secure environment to enable all automated top-ups.


Terminal Management

This module is the main management system of all terminals. Which include the Validator, Loaders, TVM, SC etc. It easily configures all terminals remotely without any field support required. It communicates Real-Time or Semi-Online mode, (if at any time the system becomes offline) with the terminal.


Help Desk

This module enables the 24/7 help desk department users to be available 365 days a year. Incoming calls are transferred into tickets by the help desk operators and assigned to the field operators who will view the tickets from their devices while mobile.


Key Management

Within the Key Management module, the master keys are secured with an HSM under the control of the transit authorities. SAM productions are done under the control of the transit authorities and are independent from the operator.


Configuration Management

This module allows authorized users to configure the parameters of the system.

These are:

  • Tariffs
  • Routes,
  • Locations etc.


User Management

This module allows authorized users to configure the system users and the authority levels, as well as the passenger account management process
